LED vs. Halogen Landscape Lighting: Why Upgrading Pays Off

Plenty of Franklin homes have landscape lighting that was installed years ago with halogen bulbs. It works, but it's expensive and frustrating to run. If that's you, converting to LED is one of the best upgrades you can make. Here's how the two compare.

Energy use

This is the headline difference. LEDs use roughly 80% less energy than halogen for comparable light output. On a system with a dozen or more fixtures running every night, that adds up to real savings on your power bill over a year, and the gap only grows over the life of the system.

Lifespan and maintenance

Halogen bulbs burn hot and fail often — frequently within a season or two — which means a recurring chore of hunting down and replacing dead bulbs around the yard. Quality LED lamps are rated for many years of nightly use. For most homeowners, ending the constant bulb-swapping is worth the conversion on its own.

Light quality

Modern LED isn't just cheaper to run — it looks better. We use warm color temperatures that make brick, stone, and foliage look rich, and LED brightness and color stay consistent from fixture to fixture. Aging halogen bulbs drift in color and fail at different rates, so an old system often looks uneven. LED keeps the whole scene looking intentional.

Do you have to start over?

Not necessarily. Where your existing fixtures and wiring are in good shape, we can often retrofit LED lamps and keep them. Where fixtures are corroded or poorly placed, we replace and improve them. Because LEDs draw so little power, a converted system can often run more fixtures on the same transformer, leaving room to improve the design. If you're tired of an old halogen system, ask us for an honest assessment.
