We use several techniques depending on the tree and the effect you want. Uplighting from the ground dramatizes trunks and canopies and works on everything from a slender crepe myrtle to a massive oak. Moonlighting places fixtures high in a large tree and aims them downward, casting soft, dappled light and shadow on the ground below like natural moonlight — a stunning effect over a patio or lawn. In planting beds, we add lower accent lights to bring out ornamental shrubs, boulders, and garden features so the whole landscape has layers of light rather than a single flat wash.
